Fun fact: It acts as a pioneer plant, one of the very first to colonize bare, disturbed ground where little else will grow. By settling in these tough places, it helps stabilize the soil and create sheltered microclimates, paving the way for other plants to follow and begin the slow process of healing the land. Its fuzzy leaves serve as a food source for the caterpillars of the Tropical Checkered-Skipper butterfly, making it a crucial nursery for the next generation of pollinators. For adults of that same species, as well as for native bees, its persistent little pink flowers are a vital fueling station in an otherwise sparse environment. 🦋🐝
