Fun fact: As a native tree, it is a foundational component of the dry coastal forests and limestone thickets where it grows. Its deep root system helps to stabilize the soil, preventing erosion in vulnerable coastal landscapes, especially during the hurricanes that frequently pass through the Caribbean. It also provides direct habitat; its dense, thorny structure offers valuable shelter and nesting sites for small birds, reptiles, and invertebrates, protecting them from predators and the harsh sun.
