Fun fact: While more common in parts of the Caribbean, Exostema caribaeum is endangered in the state of Florida. It is found naturally in only a few locations, primarily in the pine rocklands of the Florida Keys and southern Miami-Dade County. Its habitat is severely threatened by development, habitat fragmentation, and sea-level rise. The flowers are often most fragrant at night, a common trait among plants that specialize in moth pollination. The long tubes are perfectly shaped for the proboscis (long tongue) of hawkmoths, its primary pollinator.🦋🌊
