Fun Fact: It's a Salt Marsh Specialist: This shrub is ahalophyte (salt-tolerant plant) and is perfectly adapted to thrive in the challenging conditions of salt marshes, brackish marshes, and coastal swamps. It can handle periodic flooding by saltwater and poor, sandy soils. The beautiful white"bloom" in the fall is actually the fruit stage. The female plants produce thousands of tiny, dry seeds, each attached to a feathery, white structure called a pappus (similar to a dandelion seed). This pappus acts as a parachute, allowing the seeds to be dispersed long distances by the wind.🍃 It is a host plant for the larval stage (caterpillars) of the Salt Marsh Moth.🐛🦋
