Fun fact: This plant is incredibly drought-tolerant and salt-tolerant once established. It thrives in some of Florida's and the Caribbean's harshest environments, including coastal strands, sandy pinelands, and rocky thickets. Its ability to withstand salty spray and poor, dry soils makes it a champion of coastal ecosystem resilience. The bright red berries are a favorite food for many songbirds, including mockingbirds, catbirds, and vireos. The plant provides both sustenance and protective cover. It serves as a host plant for the larvae of certain butterfly species, like the Miami Blue butterfly (Cyclargus thomasi bethunebakeri), which is critically endangered.🪴🐦🦋
