Fun fact: This plant is a master of survival in one of the most punishing environments on earth: the beach dune. It is a robust, low-growing, sprawling shrub that forms dense, woody mats across the sand. Its succulent, glossy green leaves are its first line of defense, being thick and fleshy to store fresh water and resist desiccation from constant wind and salt spray. This succulent nature also helps it survive being buried by shifting sand, as it can simply re-sprout from the buried stems.
