Fun Fact: It's known as the "Black Mangrove," and it breathes through thousands of snorkel-like straws called pneumatophores. These bizarre-looking, finger-like structures stick vertically out of the oxygen-poor mud around the tree's base. They act like snorkels, absorbing oxygen from the air and transferring it to the submerged roots below, allowing the tree to live in waterlogged, anaerobic soils that would suffocate most other plants.🪴🌿 Of all the New World mangroves, the Black Mangrove is the most cold-tolerant. It can survive brief freezes and is found farther north (along the Florida coasts and in the Gulf of Mexico) and farther south than its red and white mangrove relatives. This tolerance allows it to dominate in cooler mangrove habitats.
